Structural Construction and Electrical Services
Platform Erection, Overhead Truss, and Power

CLIENT
Torani Inc.
PROJECT SCOPE
Industrial Mechanical, Electrical, Project Management, Engineering
INDUSTRY
Manufacturing, Food & Beverage
LOCATION
San Leandro, Calif.
SilMan Industries deployed structural and electrical teams to install industrial platforms and an overhead truss support system to flavored syrup-maker Torani Inc. as part of tenant improvements undertaken at their new headquarters in San Leandro, California.
Facility Improvements for a New Home
Torani is a family-owned company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, established in 1925. Today, their products can be found in coffee and cocktails worldwide. This project is part of a broader tenant improvement project as the company moves its headquarters from South San Francisco to San Leandro. The new location is just one mile from our own headquarters.
Previously, SilMan was contracted to provide civil construction services at its new facility. You may learn more about that project here.
During their initial engagement with the company, SilMan was also tasked with providing additional services for an interior platform system.
This 4500sf equipment platform houses Torani’s conveyance and de-palletizing system. The scope also required truss modifications throughout the facility to support the elevated elements of the production equipment.
Haskell Construction was the General Contractor for the overall tenant improvement project. SilMan has previously worked with Haskell on facility improvements for beverage producers Tropicana, Constellation Brands, and Woodbridge Wines by Robert Mondavi.
Structural Construction and Electrical Infrastructure at Torani
Scope & Description of Work
The SilMan Specialty Trade Services team provided a fully implemented solution that enables Torani to have a fully integrated, single-level equipment platform. The seamless operational structure at SilMan’s creates regular collaboration across all departments and divisions. These interactions have built a broadly-skilled team that easily crosses disciplines and technologies on a daily basis.
In the Torani platform and truss project, these in-house resources provided time and cost savings to the client, stemming from the convergence of material handling, structural, and electrical expertise within the team, both in the field and in the back office.
SilMan’s Tupelo-based engineering team collaborated closely with Torani and Haskell to develop a comprehensive Design Engineering plan that met the client’s goals. These efforts resulted in detailed system engineering and construction strategies, the preparation of approval drawings, structural drawings, and, ultimately, as-built drawings.
Similarly, our Site Services execution teams are equally versed in the peculiarities of structural, mechanical, and electrical installation, with years of service in leading manufacturing, parcel, and e-commerce companies.
Skills deployed for the project include:
- Project management and procurement
- Structural Construction
- Electrical Installation
- Site Safety

Most recently completing a bottling line for vintner Opus One Winery, as well as NorCal winemakers Stags Leap and Woodbridge.
We are also currently engaged with HP Hood and the Barry-Wehmiller Design Group on a design-build facility upgrade and new production line in Sacramento, California.
Other beverage providers served include cooperage manufacturing material handling system integration and installation Brown Forman, McGinnis Wood Products, and Speyside.
About SilMan Industries
SilMan Industries (formerly SilMan Construction) is based in San Leandro, California, with Engineering and Field Operations offices in Tupelo, Mississippi. The firm provides integrated turnkey solutions in the Industrial, Manufacturing, Distribution, and Public Works sectors.
Notably, in 2010, SilMan Industries was contracted to dismantle and transport the NUMMI assembly line in Fremont, Calif., transport the equipment, and reinstall the system in Blue Springs, Miss., establishing Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi (TMMMS). This high-visibility project ignited the company’s meteoric growth, laying the foundation for SilMan’s national service area.

Frequently Asked Questions for Torani Structural Construction
How much does it cost to install an industrial equipment platform?
The cost of installing an industrial platform or mezzanine varies significantly based on size (like the 4,500 sq ft platform built for Torani), load requirements, necessary structural engineering, and type of decking. Turnkey solutions, such as those offered by SilMan, can optimize costs by leveraging the convergence of material handling, structural, and electrical expertise within the team, both in the field and in the back office.
What are overhead trusses used for in a manufacturing facility?
Overhead trusses in a manufacturing facility are primarily used to provide structural support for heavy suspended equipment, such as elevated conveyor systems, utility piping, and lighting. They are essential for creating an open floor plan while maximizing equipment capacity above the production area.
Why should structural and electrical services be integrated in a manufacturing project?
Integrating structural and electrical services, like SilMan did for the Torani project, streamlines the project timeline and ensures compatibility between the physical platform and the equipment's power needs. This "single-source" approach improves project coordination and overall safety and efficiency.
