Caster Deck Installation at Air Cargo Terminal

SilMan Industries recently completed the installation of a Caster Deck system at the commercial air hub, Port of Oakland, California, for a leading parcel carrier.  SilMan was engaged by Fast Global Solutions for the project.

West Coast imports/exports continue to expand, and so does the prominence of the Port of Oakland as a gateway to North America and Asia.  In turn, tenants of the Port continually update their facilities and technologies to capitalize on the opportunity.

When this parcel carrier decided to upgrade its tarmac operations, it turned to Fast Global Solutions, the worldwide leading manufacturer of non-powered ground support equipment.

Relationships Yield Successful Project Implementation

SilMan’s Site Services Division is pleased to once again contribute to the ongoing success of the Port of Oakland.  Recent projects for the Port include the installation of a  Checked Baggage Inspection System at Terminal 2 and 25 Charging Stations for Electric Ground Service Equipment at Terminal 1.

While we have also enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the parcel carrier over the years (see below), this is SilMan’s first installation contract with Fast Global Solutions.

Since the carrier’s fleet began using the new equipment before its completion, this project became a very high-profile one for the client.  The revised work plan, adapted to this situation, kept the planes moving and contributed to the carrier efficiently moving packages during installation.  And the project was completed on schedule.

Strong collaboration between the client, manufacturer, and installer contributed to successful completion, just in time for the carrier’s peak holiday season.

Project Summary from Les Paul, Managing Director for Fast Global Solutions:

“This project was a huge success for all of us.  Rob (SilMan), Chuck (FGS foreman), Mario (client representative) and I all worked great together to make this a seamless process, and to get a large project done.

  1. On time
  2. As designed
  3. Customized as needed to meet specific site requirements
  4. Inside the budget
  5. Flexible and worked well with client’s operations
  6. Proud final product.”

Caster Deck Installation Project

The client objectives for this project are to achieve improved turnover speed and eliminate unnecessary Unit Load Devices (“ULD”) that crowd the ramp. To achieve these results, a caster deck installation encompassing 43,000 sq. ft. of decking was required.

Excellent pre-planning between the client’s engineer and the Fast Global team set the stage for the hand-off to SilMan’s team.

Challenges

The client began using the installed sections of the deck.  With cargo jets arriving and departing daily, a revised work plan was created.

In-field customization was required, necessitating close collaboration among SilMan, FGS, and the client to maintain timelines.

Mechanical Implementation Team

The core success of this project lies in the productive interaction among all parties.  This results-oriented environment set the stage for SilMan’s execution team to work their magic.

SilMan deployed a team of six and completed the bolt and anchor installation job in less than a month.

SilMan’s Site Services group has a demonstrated history of successful installation of specialty equipment, serving a variety of industries including, food & beverage, automotive, apparel, parcel, e-commerce and manufacturing.
