Power Supply Project Deepens Service to Healthcare Industry

The SilMan Industries Specialty Trade Services team was engaged in the installation of a new emergency power distribution system at the San Ramon Regional Medical Center (SRRMC). The project provided modifications to the existing electrical power switchboards that will expand emergency power resources to include all non-essential services. Previously, the emergency power system only supported portions of non-essential electrical systems.

In the wake of well-publicized rolling blackouts in Northern California, many businesses have undertaken capital projects to protect their operations against forced shutdowns. The situation could hardly be more vital for the health care industry, where the unexpected loss of electricity is a matter of life and death.

The completion of the SRRMC project marks another milestone for SilMan Industries and their expansion in the medical sector. Recent projects in healthcare include facility updates for St. Rose Hospital (Hayward, California), AGV fleet electrical infrastructure at the U.S. Navy Medical Center (San Diego), and regular mechanical maintenance for the  Hänel automated medical record system for the John Muir Medical Center (Walnut Creek).

Electrical Installation

Multiple Skilled Trades Deploy for Emergency Power System

The SilMan team mobilized their structural and electrical teams for this endeavor.

Scope of work included the installation of all-new breakers and modifications of the existing 4000 amp main breaker.  New conduits, conductors, kirk-key’s, and a power monitor were installed to interlock the essential and non-essential distribution panels.

In the early phases of the project, SilMan’s structural team installed ceiling and seismic bracing for all conduit runs and provided concrete fire-stops at wall penetrations.

A temporary power generator was placed in service for redundancy, in order to provide backup while emergency systems were offline during the course of construction.

Project Development and Execution

The solutions available to organizations span from simple gas-powered generators, to entire standalone emergency power resources.

SRRMC turned to Pratt Engineering (AOR) to develop the project. The final solution was designed by Sean Vessels of Advantage Electrical Engineering (EEOR).

Rick Silva, who manages client relationships for SilMan Industries, said, “this was a tightly knit team of professionals that succeeded in achieving a high degree of communication and collaboration. We are all happy with the results, and proud to work with a first-rate organization like SRRMC.”

Healthcare Construction in California

Healthcare construction and facility improvement projects in California are governed by the Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), formerly the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).

SilMan, Pratt, and Mr. Vessels will work closely with OSHPD throughout the project in order to keep the SRRMC emergency power system project on track for full compliance.

You can learn more about the HCAI process from this forms, lists and reminder resource provided by OSHPD.
