SilMan Industries Completes AGV Electrical Infrastructure
Navy Medical Center, San Diego

San Leandro-based industrial services company expands statewide Technology and Healthcare portfolio.
San Leandro, Calif.: The Site Services Division at SilMan Industries recently completed work supporting Daifuku America Corporation (“DAC”) in their efforts to deploy an updated automated guided vehicle (“AGV”) fleet at the Navy Medical Center in San Diego (“NMCSD”). SilMan Industries provided electrical services for the removal and replacement of the AGV electrical and control system. Account management and project execution were supported by SilMan’s headquarters in San Leandro in collaboration with their Tupelo, Mississippi-based engineering team.
SilMan continues to garner high-technology and automation projects nationwide, broadening the market penetration of all three divisions of the company: general construction, material handling, and industrial site services.
Jeff Piazza, a senior project leader at the company said, “safety and health protocols are always a big part of the way we do business at SilMan, and in this case played a significant role in enabling our multi-skilled team members to mobilize swiftly and effectively, once NMCSD re-opened.”
SilMan published and enacted a comprehensive Coronavirus plan in March 2020. The document was subsequently shared publicly and has been widely shared through the company’s network, via email, website, and social media.
AGV Electrical Infrastructure at NMCSD
The NMCSD AGV project was executed by SilMan’s Site Services team, with deep experience in the implementation of specialized equipment and automation systems. Skills employed include field wiring and electrical installation, as well as the repairs and updates to physical infrastructure.
The scope of work entailed the removal and replacement of existing AGV infrastructure to interface with new Daifuku smart vehicles. Details of the work include charging rooms, charging stations, control system servers, HMI interface screens, sensors, and control panels.

SilMan Industries and Daifuku
Daifuku-Webb and SilMan are elsewhere engaged in a multistate program to provide AGV electrical infrastructure for the United States Postal Service. This project is in its engineering and planning stages, with onsite work to begin in late 2020 and early 2021.
AGV Sector
AGV usage in business and industrial settings is growing worldwide. The industry is expected to grow 13% annually from 2020-2025, according to Business Wire. Daifuku is a leading producer of AGV.
Adoption of AGV in the medical sector has already begun and will likely expand in the COVID-19 era, providing efficient and hygienic transport in areas such as dietary, medical waste, and linens.
